Theater Arts & Technology: Where Creativity Meets Code

Not every child dreams of circuits and code — but every child dreams of creating something that moves people.

The AVSTEAMLeague Theater Arts & Technology Program is where imagination, engineering, and performance collide. This is the place for students who think in color, who see stories in light and sound, and who want to learn how technology brings art to life.

The Vision

Theater Arts & Technology introduces students to the thrilling world where engineering meets expression. From public holiday displays to full-scale theatrical productions, students learn how modern tools — 3D printing, robotics, lighting control, projection, and design software — come together to build emotion and experience.

This program is not about watching a show — it’s about making one.

Who Can Join

Designed for students in grades 7 through 12, this program welcomes both artists and technologists.
Some join for the love of performance, others for the love of building — and together, they create magic.

No prior technical experience is needed; curiosity and imagination are the only requirements.

The Challenge

Each season, students collaborate to design and build public art pieces, theatrical installations, or immersive event displays that blend creativity with technology.

Projects may include:

  • Animated holiday light sculptures that dance to music.
  • Interactive props and set pieces for local theater productions.
  • Art installations that respond to sound, touch, or motion.
  • Stage effects that merge mechanics, electronics, and design into visual storytelling.

Teams plan, design, build, and debut their work before a live audience — learning the entire creative pipeline from concept to curtain call.

What They’ll Learn

Theater Arts & Technology is a full-spectrum STEAM experience, connecting creative thinking to real-world production skills:

  • 3D Design & Printing: Model and fabricate custom components for props, sets, and art pieces.
  • Additive & Subtractive Manufacturing: Combine laser cutting, CNC routing, and sculpture to build durable, expressive designs.
  • Lighting & Projection Systems: Learn how color, motion, and control can create mood and illusion.
  • Digital Fabrication & Coding: Use microcontrollers and sensors to automate movement, lighting, and sound.
  • Team-Based Production: Collaborate like a theater company — with builders, artists, designers, coders, and performers working together.

This is engineering with a heartbeat — technology made human through art.

The Art of Engineering

Many students who struggle in traditional STEM environments discover their spark here.
Through creative problem-solving, they begin to see how art is engineering, and engineering is art.

Whether painting light across a stage, programming motion into a sculpture, or designing a structure that feels alive — every project teaches design thinking, systems integration, and communication in a way that textbooks can’t.

Mentorship & Collaboration

Each team is supported by a mentor experienced in theater, design, or engineering.
Mentors guide students through brainstorming, fabrication, safety, and storytelling — and help them navigate both the technical and artistic challenges of production.

AVSTEAMLeague also partners with local theaters, schools, and city programs, giving students real opportunities to see their work featured in community festivals and public displays.

Equity and Inclusion

Theater Arts & Technology is built on the same foundation of access and opportunity as all AVSTEAMLeague programs:

  • Participation is free for schools and youth organizations through community sponsorship.
  • Families and individuals may request kits or join project teams at cost, with all materials provided.
  • The program encourages collaboration between artists, engineers, and storytellers — all voices are valued.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the season, students will have:

  • Gained hands-on experience with modern fabrication tools.
  • Designed and executed a public performance or art installation.
  • Built confidence in teamwork, creative problem-solving, and presentation.
  • Developed portfolio-worthy work for future education and career pathways.
  • Learned how to merge art and technology into experiences that inspire others.

Why It Matters

In a world that often separates creativity and science, this program proves they belong together.
Students don’t just learn how to use tools — they learn how to speak through them.

They become storytellers, engineers, and innovators all at once — the kind of future creators the world needs most.

Pathways for Growth

Theater Arts & Technology connects naturally with other AVSTEAMLeague programs:

  • Creative Robotics & Design – for those who want to give their art mechanical life.
  • Advanced Autonomous Dirt Racing – for those who love speed and innovation.
  • CodeLine Robotics – for those ready to engineer motion itself.

Each path celebrates a different kind of brilliance — but all share the same spirit of exploration and creation.
